Programme, playing, singing, concept and presentation were all absolutely first class. Everyone (and I mean everyone) I spoke to, left absolutely invigorated and enchanted by what they’d seen and heard.
- Nicholas Mulroy on Troubadours for Classical Transmission
Composer - Facilitator
Sam has written and facilitated collaborative compositions with groups of children, adults with special educational needs. With the musical charity Anthem he composed a response to Holst's St Paul's Suite called The Lewisham Suite which was performed by the participating children from primary and secondary schools, supported by professional players. One school, Twin Oaks Primary, asked him to return to help them compose a school song - All Together as One. This drew on Sam's experience writing for performance with a variety of experience as part of London Sinfonietta's Nightshift programme, the encore for which featured the City Lit Inclusive Choir's There is Only One World. The JASS Mass, composed with and performed by the Junior All Saints Singers with assistance from the semi-professional Parish Choir, was Sam's first composition for All Saints Church Fulham, a collaboration he has continued by running the Junior Choir and facilitating the creation of a Jubilee Anthem - Surely we should mention Corgis? - in 2022.
Sam's traditional composition practice has included a Missa Brevis and setting of I Saw the Lord for St George's Cathedral, Southwark, two pieces performed by Lontano Midsummer and Duets, a recomposition and rearrangement of songs songs by Jeff Buckley, Britten and John Dowland for mixed ensemble for the Classical Transmission series, and a new score for the film Daphne, performed live as part of the London Cinema Museum's Live Screening's 2020.
Sam has contributed vocal arrangements for Ann Dudley, including for the 2013 Oscar-winning score for Les Misérables.
Sam runs City Lit's Inclusive Choir, the Junior All Saints Singers of All Saints Fulham, Thomas's Battersea's Songbirds Chamber Choir, and leads regular vocal workshops for the VOCES8 Foundation.
